Monclova Soldiers Monument
Swan Creek Cemetery
Maumee-Western Road
One of the oldest cemeteries in the area is Monclova Townships Swan Creek Cemetery. At that location you will find the Soldiers Monument-a tribute to fallen comrades. It was originally erected by the Ruckel Post, Number 335 of the Grand Army of the Republic in 1870. The Ruckel Posts namesake is derived from the four brothers from the area who were killed in the Civil War.
The monument is a marble obelisk design with an eagle mounted atop. The gentlemen from the Ruckel Post, without a large membership or money to work with, raised $500 to commission the monument. It was erected and dedicated on Memorial Day, 1870. Inscribed on the four sides of the design were the men who died while in service to their country during the Civil War.
Over the years damage to the monument had occurred. With help and donations from local groups, such as the 2000 Monclova Township Board of Trustees (Gary F. Kuns, Barbara Spencer and Gerald Johnson), the Greater Toledo Civil War Roundtable and many families connected to this memorial-either through relations that had died in the war, or a connection in their heart, the monument was beautifully restored and rededicated on Memorial Day, 2000. 130 years to the day of its original dedication.
Among the over 200 people present at the rededication-descendants of those listed on the obelisk, coming from as far away as Maryland and Florida.
The monument is a strong symbol of the lives that were lost and the families that were affected by the war.
The Ruckel family sent six sons to war, four of whom died as a result of the war:
George Ruckel
6th Michigan Calvary, killed June 11, 1864 near Petersburg, Virginia
Philip Ruckel

John Ruckel
100th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, killed August 6, 1864 near Atlanta Georgia
Daniel Ruckel
